ITO offers various communication channels for University members, such as email, instant messaging, eFax, e-Announcement, video conferencing, Live Broadcasting and IPTV. Please refer to following links for details:

UChat is an enterprise-based unified communication mobile app, designed especially for HKBU staff to communicate with each other with text messaging, file sharing and voice call capabilities. UChat runs on Android devices as well as iPhones and iPads. Same text messaging and file sharing features will also be available on BUniPort as a browser version.

With UChat app, you are enjoying sophisticated voice call facilities. Your mobile is not only a personal phone, but it also acts simultaneously as your VoIP phone residing at your office desk when connected to Internet (Wi-Fi) with the benefits below:

  • Free from IDD charge in calling any HK telephone number when traveling overseas
  • Receive calls which attend to your office phone (with option to turn off)
  • Access directly your own voicemail at your office phone

eFax means fax by Email. The electronic fax service (eFax) can replace all the individual fax machines in offices/departments. With the new service, users will be able to send and receive fax on their PCs in electronic formats, and to search and retrieve fax easily from the server. All the existing fax numbers owned by offices/departments can be migrated to the new fax service at no cost.

ITO provides the service of posting e-Announcement notification message from Departments/Offices to University community to BUniPort as well as email. Kindly read the Policy for posting e-Announcement before submitting the request.

Video Conferencing
There are 3 types of Video Conferencing tools available in the campus:

Polycom Room System

ITO possesses a H.323 standard HD Video Conferencing Unit which can only be held at some selected locations in the University. Users are recommended to check with ITO first for the locations. Wherever possible, the ITO is able to make special arrangements to meet users’ need. Besides, ITO has set up ready-for-use VC equipment in RRS-305A. Members of the University can conduct VC locally or internationally with prior booking.

Skype for Business (Free)

Skype for Business* (formerly Microsoft Lync) is a cloud-based service which supports instant messaging, voice/video conference with multiple parties via the Internet:

  • Run on PC (Windows/Mac) and mobile (iOS/Android/Windows)
  • Support PC desktop sharing
  • Support meeting with non-BU Skype for Business account, or guest without a Skype for Business account

WebEx (Free)

WebEx is a cloud-based service which supports instant messaging, voice/video conference with multiple parties via the Internet:

  • run on PC (Windows/Mac) and mobile (iOS/Android/Windows)
  • support PC desktop sharing

Live Broadcast Services
ITO provides Live Broadcast Services which can stream video signal being captured at designated location (source below) across the campus network. Services are available at:

Destination Chapel, Lecture Theaters, Classroom and meeting room with network access managed by ITO


  1. Request for service should be raised to ITO at least 2 weeks in advance.
  2. Camera, A/V facilities (TV, Projectors) and shooting service are NOT included.
  3. User should provide their own equipment with specification below:
  • Video source: Camera with HDMI output
  • Display equipment: TV/projector with HDMI input

Information Kiosk
Since 1 September 2016, seven Information Kiosks with touch-screen capabilities have been installed at the main entrances of the Kowloon Tong campuses to allow guests and visitors interactive access to University information (such as Today’s Events, Amenities & Facilities, Public Transport and Shopping Places nearby) and campus directory.  Another important function provided is a slideshow of endorsed posters for promoting events or making U-wide announcements during the idle time of a Kiosk (i.e. after 5 minutes without user interaction).

IPTV / TV Stations & Channels
IPTV (Internet Protocol Television) is a new TV platform service running on network infrastructure in order to replace existing CABD (Communal Aerial Broadcast Distribution) system.

Without changing the TV content (channels), new IPTV platform at user end only requires a TSP, SetTop Box and Display equipment (e.g. TV set) with HDMI interface for connection establishment.

It is a platform for content dissemination for event/programme footage and promotions, University news and announcements, documentaries etc in video or audio format.
